Portrait Swap

November 22, 2008

I belong to the website WetCanvas, and in the portraiture section, there is an opportunity to participate with other artists in a portrait swap. Artists are paired up and create a portrait of each other from emailed photos sent to one another. It’s been fun. I’ve been paired with Alice who’s from USA. After we finish the portrait we mail each other the finished product by Christmas. It’s really meant to be a fun exercise, and not meant to put pressure on one another for a perfectly finished masterpiece…just a chance to have a go and see what we can do with one another’s picture. Fun!  Here’s the progress I’ve made so far…i have a bit more to do to finish it. I’ve painted this so far in 2 sessions, of about 1 1/2 hour each.  It’s oil on linen with a burnt sienna imprimatura, 8 x 10″.  Clilck on the thumbnails to see larger view.

Amazing Sally ! You’ve captured Alice even tho it is not yet complete. Thx for the “technical detail” very informative, esp the time frame.
Lucky Alice! I hope you will show the portrait she sends you! H

  2. This has been a fun diversion Hennie, taking the pressure off of myself and my landscape work by having a little ‘play’ with this portrait. It’s actually been a good learning process too. I’ve learned how important it is to have a good reference photo especially to show light and shade…which i dont really have in this, so i’m using a little bit of artists liscence.

Can’t wait to see Alice’s rendition of you! BTW….love the snow!

  4. I received Alice’s rendition this week in the mail…it is a delicate pencil drawing. I will post it when i get around to taking a picture of it.
