work in progress - oil on canvas - Janiebear - 12″ x12″
Have been busy today in the studio, managed to get the background hills in my large canvas blocked in, now i need to wait a few days, before I can glaze…i want to glaze it with a blue/violet to read as mysterious evening shadows, but might instead use a blue/green, I’m a little undecided at this point, will wait for a few days and listen for intuitive instructions…will post it after the glaze stage, which should be two stages before completing.
Since I’m unable to go any further on the large painting, I decided to finally start a portrait of my youngest daughter Jane…so started the blocking in this afternoon, and managed to get a few halftones in too…certainly need to refine it some, but I’m pleased with the beginning, and it’s looking like our Janie!..so I’m stoked about the likeness.

Decided I needed to make the right horse much larger, so repainted that today, and worked on the forground…i was careful to keep the paint layers thin for the horses and forground, dont want them to appear too literal…they are really only the secondary subject…the primary subject will be the evening light falling on the hills behind…the golden hour. by posting the work in progress, you will get to see all the corrections and rethinks i do while i go along.

cyclamen - oil on canvas - 20 x 24″
I felt like working on my cyclamen I started last week…kind of just wanted to push those shapes around and try to capture the vitality of this joyous plant which sits in my kitchen window.

“Visual art is not only about the celebration of perceiving the world anew through our eyes, it is also the celebration of our ability to grow by seeing. The truth is that we are not seperate from the objects we paint…painting is not only observation, it is sensual engagement and a visual conversation that moves, changes and develops. In that conversation lies delight and magic and your growth.” - Jerry Fresia
I liked this quote I read recently. It kind of resonated with me while working on this piece today. I’m finding my way as I go, and having a good time in the process.

Untitled, work in progress - oil on canvas - 48″ x 30″
I got a start on this painting yesterday…I’ve sketched 3 different versions of it, and finally decided on this composition…I’m kind of exploring the painting process as I go… using my ideas and my responses to this place as a guide. I’ll post it again when I complete it…I am also working on some small ones of the same theme.

Frangipani 3 - oil on canvas - 16 x 20 SOLD
This is the last of the frangipanis to brighten this snowy weekend. I’m in the studio this morning…working on new rural paintings…my arm is still bothering me, but I need to paint!

Frangipani 2 - oil on canvas - SOLD
Here’s another sunny one for ya! Last night at fitness class our teacher told us it is forcast to snow for 4 days…this is my reply to that idea.
I thought today I would change the look of my blog by using a different presentation style…I sort of like the way the paintings look upon a black background…not sure yet if I will stick with this as presentation as there isn’t a custom header on this one, and the blogrolls are at the bottom of the page here..but will give it a whirl for a while.
I’ve started an oil of my red cyclemen plant I bought before Christmas, I’m enjoying working on that at the moment. …when it’s done I’ll post it.

Just had a call from my daughter Holly…she is in Monkey Mia…a village that is in the Shark Bay Marine Park in Western Australia. They were on the beach and two dolphins swam up to them right near the shore, blowing air out of their blowholes to get their attention! It was lovley to chat with her, and a complete antidote to the snow that is coming down outside my window at the moment…which gave me an idea…enough allready of the winter paintings!!!!…so I thought to brighten the day with a post of something sunnier!

Almost monochrome, the cloudy snowy day I painted this. I think I felt there was no way out of winter at this point.

We’ve had a January thaw, but today it’s back to winter…so I’m posting one from the archives painted last winter. Pain in my right arm is keeping me from oil painting this week. If it doesn’t improve next week, will make an appointment for physio. In the meantime I am sketching lightly and perculating ideas.
