Queen’s Days - watercolour- 15″ x 11″
A weekend workshop to build the strategic plan of the Kingston Arts Council is what consumed most of my time on this glorious sunny summer weekend. Hard to be indoors in this lovely weather, but the work we completed made it worthwhile. The KAC is in the process of phenomenal change over the past year, it is now on it’s way to a solid future with a strong framework. It was great because there was a good cross section of people at the workshop from the arts community to help shape and mold it’s future.
This post is a recent watercolour sketch….a day in the life at the university.

“Heaven is a June Day” - 10 x 12″ - oil on canvas
This is a little plein air I did in June. Thought I’d post it as I have not finished the oil I’m working on.
Finally have a day off, and managed to get into my studio at 7 am this morning….this is my favourite time to paint…so peaceful and today the birds were just singing away outside my window, it was lovely. I did some more on a large oil, and then had to stop as have to wait for an area to dry before I can really progress any more on it. oh I love Sundays for the tranquility. We live on a busy rural road, but on Sundays there is not much traffic and so I really enjoy the quiet.

Dad -oil on canvas - 12″ x 12″
My father. Painted from a photo, and not a very good one for lighting. It was mostly guesswork in getting tones & values, not too satisfying a result, but there is a likeness to it.

I’ve starting a large oil landscape presently…it’s a view of hayfields and the river…inspired by the drive I take home from work on my way out to the country. I’ve been feeling like I really wanted to capture the rural landscapes at this time of year….so am finding a process to do this….it’s early stages I will see where i take it.

Bold & Soft - watercolour - 22″ x 15″
I think I am drawn to the intrigue of contrasts within some of my subjects. I love trying to balance these contrasts, such as warm/cool, hard/soft, sharp/diffused etc. Perhaps my libran tendencies.?
