In The Hothouse - oil on canvas 28″ x 24″
My daughter sent me some gorgeous pictures from an orchid hothouse she was in while travelling in Australia…i loved the way you could see all the pots hanging above and around…made some interesting paths for the eye, so yesterday and today I thought I’d have a go at this subject…found it was sort of like conducting music, trying to alternate the values and shapes in an effort to find a harmonious path for the eye to travel. I felt it was time to stop. However i will look at it again next week, and determine if it needs a glaze to harmonize the background elements.

Intention & Potentiality - watercolour 30″ x 11″
“I’d rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are
Because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star.
I’d rather be a has-been, than a might-have-been by far,
For a might-have-been has never been,
But a has was once an are.”
- Milton Berle

I’ve been scurrying around trying to organize my paintings I will take to the art show at the Lung Association Gardening Festival March 1-4. There will be 3 professional artists showing work at the show this year, and I’m one of them! I’m going to take a selection of watercolours and oils, it would perhaps be more in theme if I had more floral /gardening paintings to show, but I dont. I’m mostly painting rural and urban landscapes these days and some portraits. This painting’September Wind” will be on a promotional postcard that I will hand out at the event.

I joined this great artists blogging site a few weeks ago. It is called art blogs 4 u , here is the url if you want to go there.
http://artblogs4u.blogspot.com
It is a fun site for artists…a way to see other artists work, and read their blogs. fun!

The Drive Home - watercolour 15″ x 11″
a little watercolour sketch…this one was almost fully painted upside down.(a way for me to see the abstract shapes and values better)

I’ve sent off an application and 3 samples of my portrait work to the portrait society of Canada. I’m hoping to become a member. They offer some really good workshops etc, which I would like to be eligible for, which you can only take if you are a member. Hopefully I will be accepted.

Finished this portrait last week. It challenged me…I had done a quick oil sketch while he sat for me over the Xmas holidays, but wasn’t satisfied with it…I knew I would be giving it another go when the time was right. It came together throughout January…knowing what I wanted, but having to work out how to get it!
I’m happy because my family all think it is “totally Uncle Chris!”
